I opened my eyes to look at the clock. 4:28 a.m. I had set my alarm for 7, butI guess I was not going to sleep in today. I got out of the bed, went to the kitchen to put some water to boil, and chose one of my favorite teas to drink in a tall green tumbler. Soon the kettle produced the most delightful whistle letting me know that the water was boiling, and I am now enjoying the flavors of hot tea warming up my body inside on this cold autumn morning.
I sat down at my desk to read when I noticed a little bit of light peeking through the blinds. I looked outside and there was red in the sky. I quickly opened the blinds and grabbed my camera to capture the change of colors as my part of the world slowly faced the sun.
Satisfied I sat again at my desk to write on my journal. This has been an interesting week with the world divided over the recent elections in the United States. It was easy for me to write about it and complain to God over the attitudes of fellow human beings from both sides of the aisle.
I glanced again out the window for a moment and my eyes opened up wide in wonder. Oh the sky! The reds were so vibrant with the light of the sun now closer. I stopped my complaining, picked up my camera again, threw the window wide open, and worked at trying to capture in a tiny scale what my eyes could see in fullness.
It wasn’t long before I had to stop taking pictures and just watch in awe the emergence of the new day. I wrapped myself in a blanket, grabbed my tea, and sat down on the floor in front of the opened window. The quietness of the early morning interrupted by the songs of birds waking up. A little gold finch giving soft, adorable yawns, a nuthatch playing what it sounds to me a tiny trumpet while searching for his breakfast, and a group of ravens having their early morning talks. Cold comes in through the open window and I can smell the scent of burning wood. Someone is using their fireplace. My neighbor’s chimney pours out a light smoke. Maybe it’s them.
As the day brightens, the contrast of the ever growing blue sky, the red wispy clouds, and the tree dressed in bright yellow leaves in front of the house fills my heart with a wonder that I can not capture with my camera. And I can’t help but break out into song. How Great Thou Art, How Great Thou Art!
Earlier this week I came across an interesting passage in the book of Job. Mixing a bit some of the different Bible versions available it reads something like this.” What are human beings that you make so much of them, that you given them so much attention, that you visit them every morning, and test them at every moment?” Job 7:17, 18
Why does God do so much for us? What love is this that I can not fathom? Why take the time to paint the morning sky in such a way that this child of His would stop her complaining and spend time with Him?
The sun is now up in the sky, hidden behind soft clouds. A gentle wind runs through the trees making the yellow leaves sing quietly. The birds are now flying back and forth awake for the new day ahead. The squirrels run up and down the trees, and I can hear the sound their claws make as they walk on the most exquisite hardwood floors. People walk outside on top of carpets of soft dry leaves, and the train is passing by filled with persons God loves so much. A new day.
I loved God’s visit this morning. Truly the work of His hands declare His glory and love for us. How great You are God. How great You are!
